The Two Surfers Crafting Incredible Glass Lighting: Soktas

24 Aug 2022

We're proud to introduce you to the creative minds behind SØKTAS, Oliver Höglund and Ryan Roberts. They are a dynamic duo who have joined together to bring to life a stunning glass lighting selection. We included some of their beautiful pieces in our recent Barefoot Bay Villa project and fell in love! SØKTAS is a reflection of both their stories and visions. Read on below to get a behind the scenes look into their world of lighting...

Can you share with us your creative journey to where you are now?

We are passionate about making functional glass art. We started our idea in Oslo, Norway where we first met. Oliver focuses on creating and designing the unique pieces, while Ryan operates the business. SØKTAS is a reflection of both of our stories and visions. Oliver’s father and grandfather worked at the renowned Kosta Boda Glassworks in Sweden, and the craft has been passed down through the generations.

What has been the inspiration behind SØKTAS and your bespoke designs?

Oliver: Swedish design has been my inspiration having worked with my father and learning the craft from him, other glass makers from Scandinavia have taught me the craft over the years.

How would you define your style and how has it evolved over the years?

Oliver: Its hard to define your own style, but if I had to describe it I would say organic and functional.

Do you have a favourite collection or design?

Oliver: I really enjoy making the VØLT pendant lights, they are really challenging to make, but help hone the craft of blowing glass. No two lights are ever the same which makes it fun to create.

What is a typical workday like for you?

Oliver: Waking up early setting up the studio and emptying the previous days work, followed with the glass making process for around 6 hours. Cutting and grinding the pieces after the hotwork later in the day and then melting the next days batch of glass during the night.

Can you describe the design process?

Oliver: The design process has been an ‘idea’ and then many days actually trying to execute the idea in the glass studio. Adjustments are made along the way and eventually the design has been brought to life after a lot of trial and error.

What advice can you give those seeking a career in lighting design?

Enjoy the journey and continue to grow your ideas. Create authentic designs that you like and do it for yourself and not for anyone else.

What 3 words describe your brand?

Authentic. Organic. Distinctive.

Can you share 3 things people don’t know about you?

Oliver: Love surfing and snowboarding. My family is Swedish, but I grew up in NZ.

Which is your favourite room in your home and why?

Oliver: Kitchen because its where the best stories are shared.

Where do you see SØKTAS in five years time?

I see SØKTAS making more glass and having a good time doing it.

What's your favourite inspirational quote?

When in doubt, send it.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
