Meet the Maker: Balcony Garden

12 Aug 2022

There’s no denying the powerful effect that plants can have not only on your outdoor living space, but also on your indoor living space. Including indoor plants in your home has been proven to improve concentration and productivity, reduce stress levels and boost our moods. All the more reason to include them in every room, where possible! We have done exactly that in our recent project, The Barefoot Bay Villa in Byron Bay, and we believe it gave the home the perfect finishing touches it needed. However, the pots in which you place these plants are extremely important to the aesthetics of your home which is why we turned to The Balcony Garden to provide us with a collection of handmade pots that are designed to complement both modern and classic architecture. Read on below to find out more about The Balcony Garden and their gorgeous collection of handmade pots that have been a major hit amongst designers, artisans and international craftsmen since 2006…

Tell us about how The Balcony Garden started and how you got to where you are today.

We come from a landscape design background and The Balcony Garden essentially began because we couldn't source quality pots and planters for our own projects.  Our landscape design background was a huge advantage as we knew what customers wanted from their suppliers such as always holding stock, quality and great service.

How has the style and finishes of your products transformed over the years to what they are today?

Our first range was made from a material called GRC (Glass Reinforced Cement) or sometimes called Lightweight Cement which is still a popular material within the industry.  GRC however has its negatives such as the weight, the colour fades over time, and it tends to crack and chip very easily.  We spent over two years developing our own custom material which is made from a polyresin composite material.  This material is also waterproof, light weight, extremely strong and the colour won't fade over time.  We are constantly designing and sourcing new designs.

Can you tell us a bit more about how your pots and planters are made?

We use poly-resin for our Willow, Humphrey & Bella Ranges.  Our Bad Names Range are hand made in Northern Thailand from wood fired clay.  Our Tommaso Range of Italian Terracotta is produced using single origin Galestro Clay.

What makes your pots and planters of the highest quality?

We spend a great deal of time in product development which involves working closely with our suppliers.  Every single order is quality assured by our team before it leaves the country of origin.

Do you place emphasis on ethically sourced materials and practices?

Our products are made in various factories across South East Asia and Europe.  All of the factories we work with have been carefully chosen by our buying team and their environmental impact, treatment of employees and ethical standards are reviewed yearly.

Why are pots and planters so important to include in the exteriors of a home? How do they enhance this space?

Depending on the design of a project, sometimes an in-ground planted garden just isn't possible, that's were pots and planters come in.  They not only provide the plant life but the pot itself can become a feature.

What’s your personal favourite product from the range at the moment?

I'm personally in love with our Tommaso Range of Italian terracotta planters.  It's a beautiful combination of modern design and classic craftsmanship.

We absolutely love the Tommaso Range as well, another favourite among our designers is the Willow Range! A beautiful range of pots in varying colours, sizes and shapes with a gorgeous finish that suits both indoors and outdoors.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
